1999 Passenger Vehicles Insured Through Voluntary And Involuntary Plans By State


Car Years = Represents 1/12 of the number of exposure months of liability insurance on vehicles rated as private passenger, non-fleet type risks. May include some pickups insured as passenger cars, but not registered as such. Does not include motorcycles, RVs, fleet or self-insured vehicles.

According to R.L. Polk & Co., the fastest growing segment of the new-vehicle market is small SUVs, i.e. Toyota Rav 4, Honda CRV, Ford Escape and Subaru Forester. In 1996, there were 364,308 small SUVs registered in the US. In 2001 there were an estimated 1 million.
