Crash and injury alcohol-related crash statistics in 1999 were lower than the 1998 figures. However, the number of deaths increased by 20. Prior to 1995, Ohio alcohol-related crash figures had decreased annually since 1986. One reason may be a greater sense of public awareness regarding the hazards of drinking and driving. Another may be the impact of Ohio’s tougher DUI laws, which became effective September 1, 1993.
