OII Sound-Off Page

Crash frequency is greater in areas of higher traffic density. It makes sense—the greater the number of vehicles on the road in an area, the greater the chance for involvement in a car crash.

To illustrate, during 1999 the 259,025 registered vehicles in Cincinnati were involved in 17,900 crashes, a ratio of 1 crash for every 14.5 registered vehicles. The 506,437 vehicles in the remainder of Hamilton County were involved in 18,973 crashes, a ratio of 1 crash for every 26.7 registered vehicles. For the sake of comparison, the 42,667 registered vehicles in Putnam County were involved in only 664 crashes, a ratio of 1 crash for every 64.3 vehicles. The average statewide ratio was 1 crash for every 30.0 registered vehicles.

The tables below show the number of motor vehicle registrations, crashes and a ratio of crashes to vehicles within each Ohio county. Cities within counties are listed where information was available (population in excess of 5,000).

Statistics show that over the past 5 years about 7,000 construction zone crashes occur annually in Ohio, most of which are caused by driver inattention.

Drowsy drivers who cause crashes are likely to work night-shift jobs according to researchers at the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center. They also were more likely to work 60 hours or more a week. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety estimates that 1,500 are killed each year by drivers falling asleep behind the wheel.
