A total of 199,639 insurance complaints were filed by consumers in 2005, which represents a 22.5% decrease from 2004, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. By coverage area, auto insurance inspired the lion's share of complaints (40.5%), followed by accident and health (34%), homeowners (11.7%), life and annuity (8.6%) and commercial multiperil insurance (1.7%).
The types and numbers of 2005 complaints were:

• Denials of claims: 37,346
• Unsatisfactory settlements: 28,414
• Cancellations: 12,865
• Premiums and ratings: 12,259
