Ohio's state and local tax burden – which reflects what residents pay in state and local income taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, luxury taxes and fuel taxes, among others, as a percentage of income – ranks third highest in the nation. Ohio, at 12%, trails only Maine (13.5%) and New York (12.9%). By comparison, Alaska, at No. 50, has a 6.6% percent local and state tax burden. In 1970 Ohio ranked 47th lowest in tax burden nationally.
