There were 103 firefighter deaths in 2004, compared to 105 in 2003. Stress and over exertion, with consequent heart attacks, continue to be the primary causes. The greatest number of deaths, 34%, occurred when firefighters were going to or returning from fires; only 29 died at the site of a fire.
