In 2004, 4,000 people died and 76,000 were injured in motorcycle accidents in the US, and the associated medical costs are approaching $1 billion a year. In Ohio, where helmets are mandatory only for novice riders and those under 18, the cyclist death toll has risen from 107 in 1994 to 136 in 2003, which is at least one death every other day, considering the winter months are mostly riderless.
