National Safety Council estimates. Drivers in crashes based on data from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System and General Estimates System. Total licensed drivers from the Federal Highway Administration; age distribution by National Safety Council.
Note: Percents may not add to total due to rounding

(a) Drivers in fatal crashes per 100,000 licensed drivers in each age group
(b) Drivers in all crashes per 100 licensed drivers in each age group
(c) Number of licensed drivers under 16 higher than in previous editions due to better reporting to the Federal Highway Administration.
(d) Rates for drivers under age 16 are substantially overstated due to the high proportion of unlicensed drivers involved

Despite their growing numbers, fewer older drivers died in crashes and fewer were involved in fatal collisions during 1997-2006 than in years past, an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety study reports (December, 2008). Crash deaths among drivers 70 and older fell 21% during the period, reversing an upward trend, even as the population of people 70 and older rose 10%.
